Vision

Rākau Roroa’s Vision is for a socially inclusive New Zealand where the impact of mental distress is reduced and there is freedom from the associated prejudice and discrimination.

Principles

The Rākau Roroa programme is underpinned by the following principles:

  • Lived experience is central to the design, delivery and evaluation of all components of the programme
  • Accountability at all levels is an obligation for those associated with the Rākau Roroa programme – this includes accounting for activities, finances, and the disclosure of results is in a transparent manner.

Values

Our values are a part of what Rākau Roroa aspires to portray publicly, and what we all consider to be important. These complement the principles that have been established.

Purpose

The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to inform people involved in or representing Rākau Roroa on the standards of conduct required to best support our vision, principles and values.

Those representing Rākau Roroa (including staff, contractors, facilitators, mentors and Tall Trees) are expected to act honestly, conscientiously, respectfully and in good faith at all times when carrying out their duties and in their relationships or interactions with other people on behalf of Rākau Roroa.

Respect

All those involved with Rākau Roroa acknowledge and respect the culture, diversity and individuality of others participating in the programme, and will treat others with respect and consideration. Discrimination on any basis will not be tolerated.

Protection of Privacy and Confidentiality

All those involved with Rākau Roroa will respect other’s privacy, both physical and emotional, and ensure the confidentiality of information at all times.

Personal information shared between Tall Tree and Changing Minds or their Facilitator is confidential; disclosure of information to Changing Minds may be encouraged by your Facilitator for the purposes of safety or quality improvement and must be with your express permission.

Difficult situations

Other than medical emergencies, your facilitator should be your first point of contact.

Crisis situations

Where someone involved with Rākau Roroa is in danger or there is a threat of harm, to themselves or endangering another person, this disclosure will be given in the first instance to the appropriate Changing Minds staff who will contact in the first instance the person’s Facilitator and/or the ATLEN escalation team.

If after hours, there is a threat of imminent danger and the above cannot be contacted immediately, the person may directly contact relevant community organizations (e.g. Mental health crisis team, police, or Children & Young Persons Services etc).

Expected Behaviours

As representatives of Rākau Roroa, you have chosen you because we believe you exhibit the qualities of Maia Tika Pono Courage and Integrity.

At all times, we expect you to:

  • Read and understand all relevant documentation in the content bank(located on the left-hand side menu) including policies, guidelines and procedures (e.g. “Working with the media” )
  • Represent the methods and messages of Rākau Roroa, Like Minds, and the National Depression initiative as covered in the training.
  • Be present at the agreed times and tell us if you are not able to participate.
  • Carry out projects, duties and responsibilities associated with Rākau Roroa in a safe, efficient and competent way.
  • Maintain an appropriate standard of dress, grooming and personal hygiene.
  • Comply with lawful and/or reasonable direction, instructions and policies.
  • Respect the privacy of individuals and only use confidential information for the purposes for which it was intended, and then, only with express permission.
  • Neither use, nor allow the use of Rākau Roroa branding, resources, information, intellectual property or funds other than for approved purposes.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained while participating in Rākau Roroa.

Observe safety procedures including:

  • Keeping yourself and others safe at all times, including psychological safety as covered in training and your facilitation/responsa-buddy relationship.
  • Notifying Changing Minds about hazards or potential hazards in any environment in which you are carrying out Rākau Roroa work.
  • Notifying Changing Minds about any accident, incident or property damage.
  • Complying with New Zealand laws.

You will not:

  • Create any liability for Rākau Roroa, Changing Minds or the HPA by misrepresenting the programme, contract or relationships.
  • Act in a way that may bring Rākau Roroa into disrepute (including use of email, social media and other internet sites, engaging with media etc).
  • Seek any offers, gifts, rewards or benefits. (Koha may be accepted if not solicited)
  • Engage in any activity that may or causes physical or psychological harm of another person (such as verbal abuse, physical abuse, assault, sexual or racial harassment, bullying) and will at all times consider the safety of yourself and others including anticipating and planning for potential “triggers”. (covered in training)
  • Be affected by alcohol, medication* or non-prescription drugs while participating. (*We acknowledge that some people will be on medication and ask you to use your personal judgement at moments where a change in medication or side-effect may affect your ability to effectively participate at that particular time. This does not preclude you from participating as soon as this is no longer affecting you)
  • Provide a false or misleading statement, declaration or claim.
  • Falsify or change any documents or records.
  • Record or take photos including screenshots of any videos/ zoom meetings / forums or any other data on the moodle platform.
  • Engage in any activity that may damage property.
  • Have unauthorised possession of property belonging to anyone else.
  • Engage in criminal activity.

Conflicts of Interest

A Conflict of Interest is a circumstance where an individual has a personal interest, obligation, loyalty or relationship that may influence or be perceived to influence their representation of Rākau Roroa.

Conflicts of Interest:

  • may be actual, potential or perceived
  • may result in positive or negative undue bias
  • may call the individual’s independence, objectivity or impartiality into question
  • include past, current or possible future interests.
  • include gifts or hospitality from someone you know personally.
Tall Trees should avoid situations that may lead to conflicts of interest by:
  • Declaring any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest below.
  • Consulting with your employer before undertaking work where you may represent Rākau Roroa.
  • Making sure your other commitments do not conflict with the messages of Rākau Roroa.
  • Advising the Rākau Roroa coordinator immediately if a conflict of interest exists, occurs or could possibly occur.

Please contact your Facilitator or Changing Minds, (where you already have a conflict), potential (where the conflict is about to happen or could happen), or perceived (where other people might reasonably think you are not being objective) conflicts of interest below.

Breaches of the Code of Conduct

  • Breaches of the Code of Conduct may lead to a notification of unacceptable behaviour and a warning or the immediate end to your services as a participant.
  • Repeated breaches of the Code of Conduct will lead to the immediate end of your services as a participant.
